Dixon Place presents a reading of Helen a New Musical, with music, book, and lyrics by Joe Maloney (The Boy in the Bathroom), on Saturday, October 6th. The reading will be directed by Rachel Klein (Off-Broadway: Red Roses, Green Gold; Around the World in 80 Days) with music direction by Luke Williams (Monsoon Wedding at Berkeley Rep; Grease das Musical German Internat'l tour.)
In this new musical, inspired by Euripides' Helen, the world's greatest beauty has been hidden away by the gods in Egypt, while the notoriously bloody war is fought in her name. Meanwhile, the gods have crafted a phantom duplicate of Helen and shipped her off to Troy with the Trojan Prince. As Troy falls, Helen remains faithfully in Egypt, barely avoiding the affections of a narcissistic king. When a prophecy reveals that Helen's husband will be shipwrecked in Egypt, Helen must finally take her life back into her own hands.
The cast will star Isabel Santiago (In the Heights Nat'l Tour; Off-B'Way: Giant at The Public) as Helen, PJ Griffith (B'Way: American Idiot; We Will Rock You Nat'l Tour) as Menelaos, Remy Zaken (B'Way: Spring Awakening; Off-B'Way: Dear Evan Hansen) as Agatha, Mary Stout (B'Way: Beauty and the Beast; Jane Eyre) as Olga, Kevin McGuire (B'Way: Les Miserables; Off-B'Way: Much Ado About Nothing) as Theoklymenus, and feature Hayley Travers (The Secret Garden at Shakespeare Theatre, DC), Rosalie Burke (The Full Monty at Papermill), Tara Martinez (Evita at The Theatre Co, TX), Nazarria Workman (Motown the Musical Nat'l Tour), and Kennedy Kanagawa (Dinner with Georgette at New York Theatre Workshop.)
The reading written and composed by Joe Maloney, will be directed by former Dixon Place commissioned artist, Rachel Klein, with music direction by Luke Williams, and percussion by Derek Swink. The stage manager is Joan Wyatt (The Wanderer.)
