Kevin Carroll, Brenda Pressley and more have been lined up to star in Seven Guitars, presented by Signature Theatre Company as the first entry of their 2006-2006 celebration of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. The production will run from July 31st through September 23rd.
In addition to Carroll (
Take Me Out) and Pressley (
Cats, Dreamgirls), the cast will feature Cassandra Freeman,
Stephen McKinley Henderson, Lance Reddick, Roslyn Ruff and Charles Weldon.
"Hope and heartbreak abound in Pittsburgh's Hill district as seven
people share frustration, joy and loss in 1948. Floyd 'Schoolboy'
Barton, an aspiring blues musician, returns home to seek his fortune
and reclaim his woman; a sick old man longs for an heir to carry on his
name; and three single women cope with betrayal and lost dreams. Like
seven musical instruments, each one strikes a singular note in a
discordant world," state press notes on the show, which played the Walter Kerr Theatre in 1996 for 13 previews and 188 regular performances.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson won a Tony Award for his performance in the show, which was also nominated for a Tony as Best Play.
Signature Theatre Company will also present Wilson's
Two Trains Running in November, as well as
King Hedley II in February of 2007. All three plays were written by Wilson as part of his groundbreaking 10-play chronicle of the African-American experience in the twentieth century. Wilson passed away in August of 2005.
