In unplugged evening that follows a simple format, as Carol Channing offers ninety minutes or more of memories, humorous storytelling and, of course, several of her signature tunes, including "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," " Little Girl From Little Rock" and, of course, the title song from "Hello, Dolly!" that brings the audience up close and personal with the Ultimate Broadway Baby.
If theatergoers were to be polled about what they felt was the most memorable scene in musical comedy, most would probably cite the moment when the curtains part atop the stairs of the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant and Dolly Levi appears in her red Freddy Wittop gown, beginning her descent to "rejoin the human race." As both an impersonator and the impersonated, the name Carol Channing has worldwide recognition for her trademark ditzy persona, poofy wigs, gargantuan glasses and smear of bright red lipstick, Channing is a thoughtful and highly engaging storyteller. An extroverted performer, her kooky, chatty and very engaging style starts out more or less chronological, but often digresses into a series of stories and anecdotes of the rich and famous with whom she has worked, including Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, George Burns, Gower Champion, Neil Simon, Sophie Tucker, the Kennedys, the (Lyndon) Johnsons, with whom she (mostly) worships. She lingers over backstage stories from her hits, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," " Lend An Ear" and "Hello, Dolly!," with classic character recreations such as the Silent Screen Star Cecilia Sisson, and, of course Dolly Levi. Channing gives audiences personal revelations and hard-earned genuine wisdom.
On May 29th, in honor of Carol's massive resume, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of entertainment arts from California State University, Stanislaus, officially making her Dr. Carol Channing. Now, in the good old fashion tradition, Dr. Carol is making Theatrical House Calls "Back Where She Belongs" nationwide and abroad by taking her new one woman show on the road entitled, "The First Eighty Years Are The Hardest."
