Carnegie Hall Presents THE SOUND OF MUSIC One Night Only Tonight!

Carnegie Hall announced yesterday the complete cast for its gala benefit performance of The Sound of Music tonight, Tuesday, April 24 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. New to the cast are Mary Michael Patterson (Anything Goes) as Liesl von Trapp, Nick Spangler (The Book of Mormon) as Rolf Gruber, Cotter Smith (Next Fall) as Herr Zeller, Drama Desk and Obie Award recipient Reed Birney as Admiral von Schreiber, and Joel Hatch (Billy Elliot) as Franz, The Butler.

In addition, making a special appearance late in Act II are three of the actors who played the von Trapp children in the beloved 1965 movie version of The Sound of MusicNicholas Hammond (the film's "Friedrich"), Heather Menzies (the film's "Louisa"), and Kym Karath(the film's "Gretl"), joining the previously announced Daniel Truhitte (the film's "Rolf"), who plays Baron Elberfeld.

These artists join the previously announced cast: Laura Osnes (Maria Rainer), Tony Goldwyn (Captain von Trapp), Brooke Shields (Elsa Schraeder), Patrick Page (Max Detweiler), Stephanie Blythe (The Mother Abbess), Joy Hermalyn (Sister Berthe), Linda Mugleston (Sister Margaretta), Faith Sherman (Sister Sophia), and Veanne Cox (Frau Schmidt). The roles of the von Trapp children include members of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus:Jake Montagnino as Friedrich, Olivia Knutsen as Louisa, Jacob Sutton as Kurt, Grace Luckett as Brigitta, Natalie Hawkins as Marta, and Charlotte Knutsen as Gretl.

This concert performance of the beloved musical with a timeless score by Rodgers & Hammerstein with book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, adapted by David Ives, is a gala benefit providing support for the music education and community programs of Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute. Gary Griffin directs the production with Musical Director Rob Fisher conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke's and theWomen of the Mansfield University Concert Choir under the direction of Peggy Dettwiler.Joshua Bergasse choreographs the concert with the production team including Wendall K. Harrington (Video and Projections Designer), Alan Adelman (Lighting Consultant), Nevin Steinberg (Sound Designer), Paul Tazewell (Costume Consultant), John Lee Beatty(Scenic Consultant), and casting by Tara Rubin and Stephanie Yankwitt.

The Sound of Music gala event is sponsored by Ernst & Young LLP with corporate chair Stephen R. Howe, Jr. and co-chaired by Susan and Ed Forst, Nelle Nugent and Jolyon Stern, and Dinny and Lester Morse, Jr. Gala guests will enjoy a festive, pre-concert dinner hosted by honorary chairs, including members of the Rodgers, Hammerstein, Crouse, and von Trapp families, and His Excellency Ernst-Peter Brezovszky, Consul General of the Republic of Austria, at Remi Restaurant (145 West 53rd Street) at 6:00 p.m. as well as the best possible concert seating. Presented with full orchestra, cast, and chorus, this performance of The Sound of Music will bring the world's most popular musical to the stage of Carnegie Hall. With music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, adapted by David Ives, and based on Maria Augusta Trapp's autobiography, The Sound of Music tells the timeless story of Maria, Captain von Trapp, and their singing family. Set in Salzburg, Austria on the eve of World War II, the score includes "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss," the title song, and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959 where it ran for more than 1,400 performances. Presented subsequently at New York City Center, New York City Opera, and in a Broadway revival in 1998-99,The Sound of Music marks its first return to New York since then with this Carnegie Hall concert version.

Carnegie Hall has worked closely with the Rodgers & Hammerstein office on concert stagings of favorite musicals in recent years, including Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel with Hugh Jackman and Audra McDonald (2002) and South Pacific with Reba McEntire and Brian Stokes Mitchell (2005) as well as Kern and Hammerstein's Show Boat with Nathan Gunn, Carolee Carmello, Marilyn Horne, and Alvy Powell (2008).
