Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto will lead the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in its Carnegie Hall debut on Tuesday, February 27 at 8:00 PM in Stern Auditorium. The concert will feature works inspired by exotic locations by Philip Glass and Silvestre Revueltas. Carnegie Hall presents the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Carlos Miguel Prieto as part of Carnegie Hall's celebration of Philip Glass, the 2017-2018 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair.

Carlos Miguel Prieto on leading the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall on February 27:

"I feel immense pride to be a part of this concert with the Louisiana Philharmonic. It is a celebration of many things: a sensational orchestra that has been a central part of the rebuilding of New Orleans, the anniversary of the legendary Philip Glass, and the music of Silvestre Revueltas, one of the real musical geniuses from Mexico." Prieto continues, "To combine the electricity of Glass, the magic of Revueltas, the soul and musicianship of New Orleans, and the tradition of Carnegie Hall - these are the things that a musician lives for and dreams about."

Prieto will conduct the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in a program centered around the music of Glass and exotic locations, including the composer's Days and Nights in Rocinha, inspired by Rio de Janiero's lively Rocinha neighborhood and Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas's La noche de los Mayas, a symphonic suite from a 1939 film of the same name set during the Mayan Civilization and incorporating indigenous instruments. The program concludes with Glass's Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists featuring the virtuosity of soloists Jim Atwood and Paul Yanich playing nine timpanis. Prieto and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will give three performances of this program in New Orleans from February 22 through 24, 2018 before bringing it to Carnegie Hall.

The 2017/2018 season marks Prieto's twelfth season as Music Director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has been a part of the cultural revitalization of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. On September 17, 2015, Prieto and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra reopened the historic Orpheum Theater after a $13 million renovation. During his tenure, Prieto has raised the profile of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra by engaging a number of internationally recognized soloists to appear with the orchestra, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Joshua Bell, and guitarist Pepe Romero. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra's Carnegie Hall debut, part of the Carnegie Hall Presents series, is a testament to Prieto's achievements with the orchestra and the orchestra's position as one of America's leading orchestras.

A highly influential cultural leader, and the leading Mexican conductor of his generation, Prieto sees music and culture as powerful diplomatic tools to foster understanding, fellowship, and peace. In addition to his position with the LPO, Prieto has been the Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico (OSN), the country's most important orchestra, since 2007. In November 2016, Prieto led the OSN on a critically-acclaimed nine-concert tour of Germany and Austria performing the works of Mexican and Latin American composers in halls such as the Wiener Musikverein. Having conducted over 100 world premieres of works by Mexican and American composers, Prieto is renowned for championing and commissioning the music of Latin American composers.

Prieto has been tapped by Carnegie Hall to lead this summer's NYO2 program, a free program that brings together outstanding young American instrumentalists (aged 14-17) from across the country for intensive training and performance opportunities. Prieto will work with top musicians from American orchestras to train and educate these talented young musicians, and lead them with performances at Miami's New World Center and in New York at Carnegie Hall. The program dates will be announced later.
