Carline Ray, a native New Yorker born and raised in Harlem, comes from a musical family. Her father was her musical hero, and a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music majoring in tuba and euphonium. She was inspired to try for Juilliard and graduated in 1946 majoring in piano and composition. A few years later she got a scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music and studied voice with John Brownlee, who was a leading baritone at the Metropolitan Opera house. She earned her master of music in voice and studied with Claire Gelda for six years.
As a singer, Carline performed as a professional concert Chorister in such groups as the Schola Cantorum, Bach Aria Group, American Opera Society and the
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. As a bass player she performed with the International Sweet Hearts of Rhythm,
Duke Ellington Orchestra with
Mercer Ellington,
Skitch Henderson,
Sy Oliver, and was a vocal soloist with
Wynton Marsalis Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra performing some of the sacred music of
Mary Lou Williams, and subbed in the Broadway Show "Purlie" she is also working on her autobiography.
Her teaching experience took her to Medgar Evers College, Hunter College,
William Paterson University, Jazz Mobile and Cobi Narita's Universal Jazz Coalition, and presently at the New School. She has received two National Endowment grants and several awards from the International Women in Jazz.
