Know a child whose inner muse loves Broadway music? For the first time ever, Camp Broadway is providing a unique summer camp tailored to kids interested in, if not downright smitten by, Broadway music. Taking place August 12-16, "Camp Broadway Pops", offers a collaboration with The New York Pops Teaching Artists, to enable kids ages 10-17 to create original musical theatre compositions and lyrics inspired by a Broadway musical.

"For six years, Camp Broadway has performed with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall at our annual birthday gala concert. We are proud to continue to grow this collaboration to reach more young people. This new camp concept, bringing kids from all across the country to learn in the heart of New York City, will provide a life-changing experience for everyone involved," says Anne M. Swanson, The New York Pops Executive Director. "Camp Broadway and The New York Pops share the common goal to encourage the love of music at every level."

To attend Camp Broadway Pops, no prior musical training or background is required. The New York Pops Teaching Artists will lead campers through workshops, classes and events, culminating with the opportunity to record their original compositions and perform them during a Family Finale Concert. With participants' musical ideas being taken from concept to creation to the recording studio to the stage in just five days, Camp Broadway Pops promises to be unlike any camp on the planet, according to Melissa Caolo, Camp Broadway's Managing Director.

"As with all our programs, Camp Broadway Pops will deliver an authentic Broadway experience, but this session lets kids brush elbows with The New York Pops Teaching Artists," Caolo says. "Campers will spend much of their training at Smash, a recording studio that caters to Broadway and other popular musicians. Then they will put on their own performance at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, a cabaret-style venue. When it's all over, these kids will walk away saying, I can't believe what I just got to do! I created something!"

The Camp Broadway Pops package includes:

  • Five days of training and activities

  • Interactive classes and workshops with Broadway musicians and composers

  • Q&A sessions with industry professionals

  • A behind-the-scenes look at a Broadway orchestra pit

  • Matinee ticket to a Broadway show and a Pre-show lunch at a Times Square Restaurant

  • A Recording and professionally engraved score of the compositions created during camp

  • Official Camp Broadway t-shirts and merchandise

  • Official Cast of Characters Headshot

  • Healthy lunches, snacks and water

  • Complimentary admission to the Family Finale Concert

For children wishing to attend two consecutive weeks of camp, Camp Broadway Pops (August 12-16) conveniently follows Camp Broadway (August 5-9) -- a different summer camp program designed for theatre- loving kids wanting to experience Broadway like a professional.
