Today, more than 16.2 million children are at risk for hunger in the United States. With federal funding programs, schools are able to provide free and reduced meals throughout the school year, but the same children in need of assistance may not be guaranteed a meal at home outside of school on the weekend. Fortunately, Blessings in a Backpack intervenes for 90,000 of those students each year, ensuring they have food over the weekends.
Members of the Cady Studios team spent Friday morning packing 750 bags full of non-perishable, nutritious food to be transported and delivered later that day to children at Esther Jackson Elementary. The school, located in Roswell, Georgia has over 50% of its students enrolled in the free and reduced meal program.
Cady Studios, a school photography company servicing schools in Georgia, Florida and Illinois felt it important to partner with Blessings in a Backpack as a new approach to be more involved in the community. As a business with former education industry workers and employees involved in schools every day, Cady is extremely passionate in giving back to help children succeed.
"It is such a huge blessing for Blessings in a Backpack and Cady Studios to be involved in our school," said Esther Jackson's Program Coordinator Melissa Arch. "Not only is it beneficial for our students and their families, but it benefits those volunteering in the community. This organization actively engages volunteers of all ages. From grade school children in small groups and clubs to adults in various organizations and companies, it's so special to see community involvement with those they never imagined needed their help."
"So often teachers find that the reason their students can't focus or aren't performing their best in school is simply because they are hungry," Diane Palmer, Associate Director of Corporate Relations at BIAB stated. "There are 65 hours from the time children leave school on Friday to the time they return Monday morning. It's important that these children are fed so that they can feel and do their very best each day."
Blessings in a Backpack currently feeds over 90,000 children across the country on a mission to "Feed the Future of America", one school at a time. Just $100 feeds one child on the weekends for one 38-week school year.
