COME FROM AWAY To Fly To Melbourne Next July!  Image

Rodney Rigby and Junkyard Dog Productions confirmed today that Melbourne will host the exclusive Australian premiere of acclaimed Broadway musical Come From Away.

Set to inspire audiences at one of Australia's pre - eminent playhouses, the Comedy Theatre, Opening on Saturday 20 July 2019, the production will benefit from a major refurbishment to the 90 - year - old heritage listed venue including new chairs and improved patron amenities Come From Away is a ground - breaking musical that tells the true story of the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It depicts the extraordinary convergence on September 12, 2001, when 38 planes and 6,579 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, almost doubling the population of the remote Canadian town.

The Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Daniel Andrews, today confirmed with much excitement how Come From Away strengthens Melbourne's position as a global leader in theatre.

COME FROM AWAY tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

With book, music and lyrics by Tony and Grammy nominees, Canadians Irene Sankoff & David Hein, Come From Away is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away), choreographed by two time Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine (Come From Away, Rocky), with music supervision by Grammy nominee Ian Eisendrath (A Christmas Story), scenic design by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt (Act One), costume design by Tony Award nominee Toni - Leslie James (Jelly's Last Jam), lighting design by two - time Tony Award winner Howell Binkley (Hamilton), sound design by Tony Award nominee Gareth Owen (End of the Rainbow), orchestrations by Tony Award and Grammy nominee August Eriksmoen (Bright Star) and music arrangements by Ian Eisendrath. In Australia Musical Director Luke Hunter (Jersey Boys) joins the team with casting by Lynne Ruthven.

Following sold - out, record - breaking, critically acclaimed world premiere engagements at La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theatre then presented in 2016 by Washington's Ford's Theatre, Come From Away landed on the"Best Theater of 2015"lists in the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, San Diego Union Tribune, and Times of San Diego.

COME FROM AWAY has won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley), Winner of 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards (New York) including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Winner of 3 Drama Desk Awards (New York) including Outstanding Musical, Winner of 4 Helen Hayes Awards (Washington, D.C) including Outstanding Production of a Musical, Winner of 4 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards (Seattle) including Excellence in production of a Musical and Winner of 6 San Diego Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Musical.

COME FROM AWAY launched a Second Company in Canada where it played a strictly limited four - week engagement from 4 January 2018 in Winnipeg and then moved to Toronto where it is currently playing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

A third company of Come From Away will launch a North American Tour across the United States and Canada at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in October 2018. The Mark Gordon Company will produce and finance a feature film adaptation of Come From Away. Two - time Tony Award and Grammy nominees ; and Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award winners Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book, music and lyrics, will adapt the feature screenplay for the project and Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley will direct.
