CBS and Showtime chief Les Moonves officially confirmed that the eighth season of Showtime's serial killer-themed drama series DEXTER, starring Broadway and Hollywood regular Michael C. Hall, would be its final in a conference call earlier today.
Moonves also discussed the series debut of another Broadway regular in a new TV role on Showtime, with the Liev Schreiber-led LA-set drama RAY DONOVAN, following DEXTER's finale.
Moonves said, "We have Ray Donovan coming on with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with DEXTER's last season starting in June, and then we have MASTERS OF SEX."
MASTERS OF SEX is a period-set medical drama that stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as sex psychologists during the dawning years of the sexual revolution.
RAY DONOVAN follows a "fixer" portrayed by Liev Schreiber who navigates through the seedy and rough terrain of Hollywood.
DEXTER stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter as a brother and sister who continue the law enforcement tradition passed down by their father with one of them harboring a very dark secret - a "dark passenger," as it were.
Of course, this news does not preclude a continiation of the series in another manner or medium, perhaps even with an alternate lead protagonist. Dexter remains Showtime's top-rated series, so anything is possible.
DEXTER's eighth and final season begins June 30 at 9 PM on Showtime.
