CALEB CHAPMAN'S CRESCENT SUPER BAND Comes to Carnegie Hall, 5/21

Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) presents Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band, twenty-five extraordinarily talented young musicians from Utah, in their Carnegie Hall debut. An exhilarating phenomenon of youthful energy and inspired musicality, the Crescent Super Band has stunned audiences worldwide, from New York to the Netherlands, performing hip, intelligent arrangements of the American standards for thousands. On Tuesday, May 21 at 8:00pm at Carnegie Hall, the Crescent Super Band will perform a program from the Great American Songbook repertoire featuring music from legendary performances at Carnegie Hall. The boisterous night on one of the world's greatest stages will feature special guests, saxophonist David Sanborn, trumpet player Wayne Bergeron, the high energy jump swing of The Voodoo Orchestra and hot Latin jazz ensemble La Onda Caribeña, in a program featuring new music from John Clayton, Greg Yasinitsky, Russell Schmidt, Sam Cardon, and Greg Hansen.

Frequently hailed as the top band of their type in the world, Chapman and the Crescent Super Band have collaborated with guest artists from the Dave Matthews Band, the Rolling Stones, Genesis, and many more. Most recently, the band was featured with jazz icon Toshiko Akiyoshi at the Telluride Jazz Festival. Their Carnegie Hall program will feature American Songbook classics such as On the Street Where You Live and When I Fall in Love. Saxophonist David Sanborn, a six-time Grammy-winner, will guest with the band in a new arrangement of I Put a Spell On You by renowned bassist/composer/conductor John Clayton. Additional world premieres on the concert, written exclusively for the Crescent Super Band, are Percolating, an original work by Russell Schmidt and arrangements of Joe Cuba's Bang Bang, by Greg Yasinitsky, and the new soul hit, Tightrope by Janelle Monae. This new arrangement by Sam Cardon showcases the band's commitment to the jazz tradition of taking current hits and reinterpreting them in the jazz idiom.

The Voodoo Orchestra, a dynamic jump swing band, features 20 top notch musicians who faithfully celebrate the music and style of one of America's golden ages of music, the '30s and '40s. Included on The Voodoo Orchestra's program is a new arrangement of Brian Setzer's This Old House by Greg Hansen. With its signature Rat Pack swagger, the band was recognized in 2010 and 2011 by DownBeat Magazine for "Outstanding Rock/Blues Band."

The sizzling 20-piece salsa band La Onda Caribeña, recognized in 2012 with DownBeat's Award for "Best Latin Jazz Ensemble," brings hot Latin jazz to the night's program. Legendary trumpet player Wayne Bergeron joins La Onda Caribeña as featured soloist on Gordon Goodwin's Horn of Puente, a signature tune of the Big Phat Band. Bergeron also solos with all three bands.

Caleb Chapman directs over 150 of Utah's most talented young musicians in eleven elite ensembles. His bands have been featured at many of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals, from Montreux to Tuscany, and have released eight full length albums on the Big Swing Face record label. Caleb was named the "John LaPorta International Jazz Educator of the Year", one of the highest honors in music education. At age 37, he was by far the youngest to ever receive this honor. In 2013, Caleb released his first book with Alfred Publishing, The Articulate Jazz Musician, detailing his celebrated teaching methods for young musicians and featuring 14 original tunes from multi-Grammy-winning member of the Dave Matthews Band, Jeff Coffin. David Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards, and has had eight Gold albums and one Platinum album. Dave has worked in many genres which typically blend instrumental pop, R&B and traditional jazz. He released his first solo album "Taking Off" in 1975.

Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most active players in the world, combining studio dates, international touring, jazz concerts, and guest soloist appearances and clinics. Bergeron's list of CD credits reads like a who's who in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day.
