Byzantium, a new historical musical with modern political resonance, will be presented at the Village Theatre (158 Bleeker St.) as part of the New York International Fringe Festival from August 12th to 21st.
Presented by Houston, Texas' Theatre Collide, the show is written by Steven Jamail (music and music direction), Troy Scheid (lyrics) and John Kaiser (book); it's staged by Off-Broadway director Cailín Heffernan (Yentl) and designed by Tony-nominated and award-winning scenic designer Kevin Rigdon (The Grapes of Wrath). Byzantium features Janet Dacal and Heath Calvert (both of Good Vibrations), Bram Heidinger (Off-Broadway's Trolls), Danielle Huben (Into the Woods revival) and George C. Heslin (Drama Desk Nominee for the Irish Repertory's production of The Colleen Bawn), as well as Erica Ash, Clark Scott Carmichael, Joseph DeVaughn, Zanna Fredland, Beth Ann Leone, Mark Light-Orr, Aisling Mulhern, Scott Parrish, Ian Pfister, Michael J. Ross, and Mark Wolff.
Byzantium portrays today's issues in a medieval Middle Eastern setting. Heffernan, who has worked within the theatrical traditions of many cultures, stated, "The young, talented creators of Byzantium bring us a tale crouched in the rare and exotic setting of the Byzantine Empire wherein we are seduced by delicious, humanly flawed characters." The production marks the Theatre Collide's first New York appearance.
