The Brooklyn Philharmonic presents its 2013 OUTSIDE-IN Chamber Concert on Wednesday, May 1 at 8:00PM at Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Phil Chamber Players will premiere brand new string quartets from this season's Outside-In Fellows, all Brooklyn residents: Jesse Krakow, Toshi Reagon and Hadi Eldebek. The program also features a new work about life in Nepal created by resident Composer-Mentor Randall Woolf with a film by Mary Harron and John C. Walsh of Ruby Nation Films, Inc., for Brooklyn Phil concertmaster Deborah Buck.

This year's fellows bring a fresh perspective to chamber and orchestral music with a collective background of intriguing variety. They are all multi-dimensional composers, performers and artists, whose musical endeavors have included indie, avant-pop, experimental, art-metal (Jesse Krakow); a hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals and funk (Toshi Reagon); and traditional/contemporary oud and arabic music (Hadi Eldebek),

In addition to world premiere string quartets from the three fellows, the program's fourth premiere is a new collaboration between composer Randall Woolf and filmmakers Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol) and John C. Walsh (Ed's Next Move, Pipe Dream). The three have created two previous works: Women at an Exhibition, and Holding Fast. This newest collaboration was commissioned by the Brooklyn Phil, and features both track and solo violin performed by Brooklyn Phil concertmaster Deborah Buck.

OUTSIDE-IN
Now in its sixth cycle, the OUTSIDE-IN program celebrates composers whose work reflects the energy, power, and pulse of Brooklyn, while fostering new voices from backgrounds that reflect the community's diversity. The program pairs non-orchestral musicians with Brooklyn Phil's resident Composer-Mentor, Randall Woolf, and Artistic Director, Alan Pierson, to create new orchestral works. The fellows are guided through the process of writing new pieces for string quartet and chamber orchestra, while respecting their unique and individual musical styles. Compositions for string quartet receive a world premiere performance in an eclectic spring concert, while the chamber orchestra pieces are performed in a public orchestral reading session the following fall.

Previous Outside-In Fellows have included Charlie Looker (2011-2012), Natalie Elizabeth Weiss (2011-2012), Tim Fite (2011-2012), Matthew Mehlan (2010-2011), Corey Dargel (2010-2011), Jeremiah Lockwood (2010-2011), Elan Vytal (2009-2010), Ryan Brown (2009-2010), Susan Oetgen (2008-2009), Darcy James Argue (2008-2009), Valerie Coleman (2007-2008), Cristian Amigo(2007-2008).

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
