Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday Series Continues Today, 10/6

Today, October 6, 2012 Target First Saturday, the Brooklyn Museum embraces the artwork of one of Brooklyn's celebrated artist Mickalene Thomas. Connect with Thomas through her work and cultural activities throughout the day in connection with the exhibition Mickalene Thomas: Origin of the Universe. The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday attracts thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. The October highlights include:

5-7:30 p.m. Music: Music: Candice Anitra blends poetry and melody in edgy, electro-rock-infused songs.

5-8 p.m. Action Station: Have your photo taken against a scene from one of Mickalene Thomas's works.

6 p.m. Performance: Brooklyn-based artists Latasha N. Nevada Diggs, Beatrice Anderson, and Jamie Philbert present a multimedia performance of spoken word and music inspired by Mickalene Thomas. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6-8 p.m. Gallery Talks: Museum Guides and Educators lead thought-provoking discussions on works from the Museum's collection.

6:30-8:30 Hands-on Art: Use sumptuous, plush embellishments to create a collage inspired by Mickalene Thomas. Free tickets are available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

6:30 p.m. Artist Talk: G. Lucas Crane creates a live sonic collage and discusses the parallels between his soundscapes and Thomas's visual collage technique. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7 p.m. Book Club: Harmony Holiday , recipient of the 2011 Motherwell Prize for her book of poetry Negro League Baseball, reads selections from her work, which pushes the boundaries of language, evoking imagery and musicality.

8 p.m. Fashion Show: Show off your best 70s-inspired threads on the catwalk.

8:30 p.m. Performance: Nucomme and the Curators present a musical tribute to Betty Mabry Davis, ex-wife and muse of MiLes Davis and innovator of jazz-funk fusion.

9 p.m. Forum: Mickalene Thomas's art is influenced by her mother; visitors are invited to share stories about the mother figures who have been influential in their lives.
Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 10 p.m.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 10 p.m. and includes entrance to all galleries and events. Programs subject to change without notice. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines for free tickets often form thirty minutes in advance.
