Brooklyn Museum Presents Adult Public Programs in September and October

During September and October the Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of public programs for adults, including a conversation with artist Sanford Biggers, award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson, and hip-hop artist Mos Def; a taping of the television program Cooking with GalleryBeat; a performance by acclaimed soul-jazz vocalist Somi; and Thursdays @ 7, a series of engaging adult programs that takes place every Thursday evening.

PERFORMING ARTS & FILM

Film: Commemorating 9/11
Sunday, September 11, 2-3:30 p.m.
To mark the tenth anniversary of September 11, the Museum presents Objects and Memory, about individuals who have preserved meaningful objects in the aftermath of personal upheaval (Brian Danitz and Jonathan Fein, 2008, 62 min., PG), and three animated short films based on interviews recorded by the oral history project StoryCorps in which people remember loved ones lost on 9/11 (Mike and Tim Rauch, 2011, 12 min., NR). A question-and-answer session with Fein and the Rauch brothers follows.

Music: St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble
Saturday, October 15, 2-4 p.m.
St. Luke's presents a program entitled "Kindred Spirits," featuring Johannes Brahms's first chamber work (championed by his elder Robert Schumann) and Schumann's final chamber piece (inspired by the music of the young Brahms). Artist Talk and Book Signing: Martha Wilson
Saturday, September 17, 2 p.m.
Martha Wilson, pioneering feminist artist and founder-director of Franklin Furnace, discusses her forty-year career and signs copies of her book Martha Wilson Sourcebook: 40 Years of Reconsidering Performance, Feminism, Alternative Spaces, published by Independent Curators International.


THURSDAYS @ 7
The Museum comes alive every Thursday at 7 p.m. with a series of special programs. Cool, with a distinctive Brooklyn vibe, the series includes interviews, performance, film, and eclectic tours. The lineup for September and October is as follows:

September 15
BrooklynNites Jazz: Brooklyn-based harmonica virtuoso Gregoire Maret.

September 22
Gallery Tour: "American Art: Nude, Naked, or Undressed?"

Film: Fires in the Mirror (George C. Wolfe, 1993, 90 min.). Anna Deavere Smith's docudrama about the Crown Heights civil disorder of August 1991. A question-and-answer session follows the screening.

September 29
Gallery Tour: "Scandal and Intrigue in American Art"

October 6
Cooking with GalleryBeat: Paul H-O, indie filmmaker and director of Gallery Beat, and self-proclaimed psychotherapist Dr. Lisa Levy host an episode of their TV talk show before a live audience. Their guests are Walter Robinson, editor-in-chief of artnet Magazine, and Dr. Daryl Isaacs, costar of the 2004 documentary Super Size Me. The program will be taped for airing at a later date.

October 13
Gallery Tour: "Love in Ancient Egypt"

In Conversation: Contemporary artist Sanford Biggers talks with Marcus Samuelsson, award-winning chef and owner of the Harlem restaurant Red Rooster, and Mos Def, celebrated actor and hip-hop artist. Tickets, which include Museum admission, are $10 ($6 for members and cultural colleagues). Seating is limited; advance purchase recommended via www.museumtix.com.

October 20
Sensory Tour: Designed for all adults, including individuals who are blind or partially sighted, this tour of Sanford Biggers: Sweet Funk-An Introspective moves beyond what can be seen to the realms of smell, touch, and sound. BrooklynNites Jazz: Acclaimed soul-jazz vocalist Somi, fresh from the release of her new album, Live at Jazz Standard.

October 27 Film: The Latino List (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2011, 60 min.). The companion HBO documentary to the Museum's exhibition. A question-and-answer session with the artist-director follows the film.

Behind-the-Scenes Curator Tour: Curator Ed Bleiberg and Conservator Rachel Danzing discuss the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead on view in The Mummy Chamber. Registration required. To register, e-mail museum.guides@brooklynmuseum.org or call (718) 501-6229.
