Brooklyn Museum Presents Adult Public Programs in January and February

During January and February the Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of public programs for adults, including an art-making workshop inspired by Valentine's Day; a talk with artist Rachel Kneebone; a performance by the Orchestra of St. Luke's; and Thursdays @ 7, a series of engaging adult programs that takes place every Thursday evening.

PERFORMING ARTS

Music Off the Walls: The Brooklyn Philharmonic presents "Brooklyn Bridge with Deborah Buck"
Saturday, January 29, 2 p.m.
Brooklyn Philharmonic concertmaster Deborah Buck presents a program of music written during the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, including works by Brahms, Bernstein, and Tchaikovsky. Music: Orchestra of St. Luke's
Saturday, February 25, 2 p.m.
St. Luke's presents a program entitled "Circling Bach," exploring the diverse influences and consequences of the music of J. S. Bach with works by Rossi, Handel, Corelli, Vivaldi, and C. P. E. Bach. A gallery talk making connections between the music and the art in the Museum will directly follow the program. Tickets are $35 ($25 for members), with $10 rush tickets available to students. Saturday, January 21, 2 p.m.
Jon Anderson, longtime partner of HIDE/SEEK artist Paul Cadmus, speaks to scholar Philip Eliasoph about the artist's life and work.

Artist Talk: Rachel Kneebone
Sunday, January 29, 12-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m.
Artist Rachel Kneebone discusses her exhibition at the Museum and how Auguste Rodin has influenced her work.

Brooklyn Afternoons: Art and Conversation for Individuals with Memory Loss
Wednesdays, January 18 and February 15, 2-4 p.m.
A monthly gallery program for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. Light refreshments are served, and FM assistive-listening devices are available. Move beyond what can be seen to experience the realms of smell, touch, and sound. Sensory Tours are designed to be enjoyable for all adults, including vision-impaired individuals. THURSDAYS @ 7
The Museum comes alive every Thursday at 7 p.m. with a series of special programs. Cool, with a distinctive Brooklyn vibe, the series includes interviews, performance, film, and eclectic, eye-opening tours. The lineup for January and February is as follows:

January 5
Artist Talk: Feminist artist K8 Hardy responds to themes of portraiture and self-styling in HIDE/SEEK.
Gallery Tour: Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties.

January 12
In Conversation: Inspired by the exhibition Youth and Beauty, fashion photographer Kyle Ericksen, costume designer Lisa Padovani of the HBO production Boardwalk Empire, and curator Jan Reeder of the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art discuss changing styles and body ideals.
Sensory Tour: A sensory encounter with the subjects of portraits and the artists who paint them. Enjoyable for adults, including vision-impaired individuals. Registration required via e-mail to access@brooklynmuseum.org.

January 19
Gallery Tour: Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties.
New Ways of Seeing: Drop-in Drawing Workshop
Brooklynites Jazz: Brooklyn-based Grupo Yanqui performs Latin jazz.

January 26
Film: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927, 148 min.). A newly restored version of this cinematic masterpiece depicting a dystopian future where a dehumanized working class exists beneath the world of wealthy elite.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Creative Art Making: A Valentine's "Crafternoon"
Saturday, February 11, 2 p.m.
Maura Madden, author of Crafternoon: A Guide to Getting Artsy and Crafty with Your Friends All Year Long, leads a workshop on how to make creative collage pieces inspired by love and Valentine's Day. There is a $15 materials fee, and registration is required. Register at www.museumtix.com or at the Museum's Visitor Center. A limited number of free tickets are reserved for Museum members on a first-come, first-served basis. Members should call (718) 501-6326 for tickets. A tour making connections between art in the Museum and the "Crafternoon" will precede the program at 1 p.m.

New Ways of Seeing: Drop-in Drawing Workshop
Thursdays, January 19 and February 16, 7:30-8:45 p.m.
Join us the third Thursday of every month for drawing in the Museum. Led by a professional teaching artist, participants visit a specific work from the Museum's collection, explore the artist's process, and develop their own drawing style. No experience is necessary, and all materials are provided. Materials fee (Museum admission not included): $5 ($4 members). RSVP to gallery-studio@brooklynmuseum.org.
