Brooklyn Museum Offers Public Programs Highlighting Women's History Month

During March the Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of adult public programs for adults, including an evening jazz performance by Helen Young, a feminist art performance by The Guerrilla Girls, and an artist tour with Raw/Cooked's Shura Chernozatonskaya. The Museum continues to come alive every Thursday evening starting at 7 p.m. with a series of innovative and engaging programs that embody a Brooklyn state of mind.

Gallery Tour: "Unconventional Women from Ancient Egypt to Twenty-First-Century Brooklyn"
Artist Tour: Raw/Cooked artist Shura Chernozatonskaya leads a tour of her site-specific painting installation.

In Conversation: Following a performance by a group of legendary poets and writers, poet and publisher Jessica Care Moore, the founder of Black Women Rock!, discusses the state of black poetry and literature with painter and author Danny Simmons, the co-creator of Def Poetry Jam.

Panel Discussion: Women in the Downtown Theater: Producing Your Own Work
Sunday, March 11, 3 p.m.
Moderated by playwright Erin Courtney, this panel explores the work of figures in New York's downtown experimental theater scene, which include Kelly Copper of Nature Theater of Oklahoma, playwright Sibyl Kempson, Young Jean Lee of Young Jean Lee's Theater Company, Annie-B Parson of Big Dance Theater, and Tina Satter of Half Straddle.

Gallery Tour: "Seeing the Figure: Nude, Naked, or Undressed?"
Film: Miss Representation (Jennifer Sibel Newsom, 2011, 85 min.). Documentary examining the role that the mainstream media plays in women's underrepresentation in positions of power.
New Ways of Seeing: A Drop-in Drawing Workshop, 7:30-8:45 p.m.
Join us the third Thursday of every month for drawing in the Museum. Led by a professional teaching artist, participants visit a work from the Museum's collection, explore the artist's process, and develop their own drawing style. Film: Back Walking Forward
Sunday, March 18, 2 p.m.
Moving documentary (Kavery Kaul, 2011, 76 min.) about an active young man suddenly bound to a wheelchair following a car accident. While he struggles to relearn life skills, his family searches for a "new normal" as they navigate a borderland between hope and despair. After the screening, the family and director talk about the making of the film.

Panel Discussion: "Women Shaping Our World: Architecture, Gender and Space"
Saturday, March 17, 2 p.m.
The past decade has seen an unprecedented rise in interest in architecture and design-in both the public and private realms. How have women been engaged in shaping this conversation? Focused on the intersection of architecture and gender, four women architects will discuss their views on the social and political implications of architecture in an increasingly complex world and the role women play in shaping today's society. John Cary, editor of the blog PublicInterestDesign.org, moderates among the panelists Anne Fougeron, Principal, Fougeron Architecture, San Francisco; Toni Griffin, Director, J. Max Bond Center, The City College of New York; SuSan Rodriguez, Partner, Ennead Architects, New York; and Karen Stein, writer and architectural consultant, New York.

Brooklyn Afternoons: Art and Conversation for Individuals with Memory Loss
Wednesdays, March 21, 2-4 p.m.
A monthly gallery program for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. Light refreshments are served, and FM assistive-listening devices are available. BrooklyNites Jazz: Helen Sung, winner of the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition, performs.
Sensory Tour: Begins at 6 p.m.
"Jazz and Innovation." A full sensory encounter with selected works from the Permanent Collection that have to do with jazz. Designed for all adults, including vision-impaired individuals. Registration required at access@brooklynmuseum.org.
Asia Week Tour: "You Can Take It with You: Burial Objects from Ancient China and Egypt"

Artist Talk and Video: Simone Leigh and Liz Magic Laser
Sunday, March 25, 2 p.m.
Leigh and Laser present and discuss their video BREAKDOWN (2011), created in collaboration with Alicia Hall Moran. The talk includes screen clips of the script's source material: lines lifted from Anthony Harvey's 1967 film adaption of Amiri Baraka's play The Dutchman, the 1970s television show Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and the contemporary reality show Intervention.

Performance: Iconic feminist group the Guerrilla Girls presents an interactive, multimedia performance that illustrates their history of using art and action to expose and critique discrimination, using examples from the newly released edition of their Art Museum Activity Book.
Panel Discussion: "Transnationalism and Women Artists in Diaspora"
Saturday, March 31, 2 p.m.
A.I.R. Gallery, The Rutgers Institute for Women and Art, and The Feminist Art Project present a discussion about the international feminist community in New York featuring panelists Dr. Abena Busia, Chitra Ganesh, Kira Greene, Yulia Tikhonova, and Dr. Yasmin Ramirez.
