Brooklyn Museum Announces To Live Forever As Target First Saturday 4/3

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays event attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. April's Target First Saturday celebrates the special exhibition To Live Forever: Art and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt. Highlights include a performance by music and dance ensemble Zikrayat, a screening of the Academy Award-winning film Departures, and a dance party hosted by DJ Nickodemus and the Spy from Cairo.

SCHEDULE OF PROGRAMS

5-6 p.m. Discussion
Curator of Egyptian, Classical, and Near Eastern Art Edward Bleiberg and Objects Conservator Lisa Bruno discuss the process of researching and conserving the objects in To Live Forever.

5-7 p.m. Music
Arab music and dance ensemble Zikrayat combines the atmosphere of Egyptian musical cinema with the music and dance traditions of Egypt, Lebanon, and the greater Arab world.

5-11 p.m. Object of the Month
Learn about the Pair Statue of Nebsen and Nebet-ta in the Egyptian Galleries.

6:30 p.m. Film
Departures (Yojiro Takita, 2008, 130 min., PG-13). Drama about an out-of-work Japanese musician who takes a job preparing the dead for burial. Winner of the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-On Art
Design a copper embossed amulet with Egyptian symbols. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7 p.m. Curator Talk
Edward Bleiberg on To Live Forever. A catalogue signing follows. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8 p.m. Young Voices Talk
Student Guides on the afterlife in ancient Egypt.

9 p.m. Book Club
Author Joshua Cohen discusses his book A Heaven of Others, a poetic dream-world novel about the afterlife.

9-11 p.m. Dance Party
DJ Nickodemus and the Spy from Cairo host.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space available and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are subject to change without notice. Museum admission is free after 5 p.m. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $4 from 5 to 11 p.m.
