The iconic musical Fiddler on the Roof was written in 1964 by Joseph Stein, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. It tells the story of the residents of a small Russian village on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution, who attempt to maintain family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. Featuring heartwarming songs like "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Sunrise, Sunset," and "If I Were a Rich Man," this landmark Broadway musical cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion.
The original 1964 Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins (his last original Broadway staging) and featured Zero Mostel as Tevye the milkman, Maria Karnilova as his wife Golde (each of whom won a Tony for their performances), Beatrice Arthur as Yente the matchmaker, Austin Pendleton as Motel, Bert Convy as Perchik the student revolutionary, and Julia Migenes as Hodel. Joanna Merlin originated the role of eldest daughter Tzeitel, which was later assumed by Bette Midler during the original run.
