Renowned choreographer Mark Dendy's (Lincoln Center's Out of Doors and The Met's The Magic Flute) work "We Are The Ones" will be performed Sunday, January 12 during the 11:15 AM worship celebration at Middle Collegiate Church.
Both professional and non-professional dancers will emerge from the pews as Broadway's Tituss Burgess' song "We Are The Ones" is sung by Burgess, Broadway's Jenny Powers (Grease and Little Women), and BETTY's Alyson Palmer with the Middle Church Choir. The Middle Church Choir is under the direction of Jonathan Dudley, former director of the Cincinnati Opera. Broadway's Branch Woodman (Cinderella and Priscilla Queen of the Desert) will also perform Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" as part of the morning celebration.
These special artistic offerings honor the activism of everyday people who work for economic equality, racial reconciliation, and LGBT justice. Under the leadership of senior minister, Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Ph.D., Middle Church has spoken out on these justice issues to a national audience. The church celebrates ten years of Dr. Lewis' leadership during the worship experience.
On Sunday, January 12 at the 6 PM Art & Soul gospel worship, the celebration continues with special music from Broadway's Tituss Burgess as well as Kristina Nicole Miller (The Lion King), Martina Sykes, Larry Penn Whitfield, Cassondra Kellam, and the TruPraise Gospel Ensemble.
Middle Collegiate Church is located at Second Avenue and E. 7th Street in the East Village. For more information visit middlechurch.org.
