Following recent news of a major overhaul of Broadway's iconic Palace Theater, newyorkimby.com reports that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has also approved a renovation of the Helen Hayes Theater, located at 240 West 44th Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, as well as an expansion of its annex.
The theater was purchased by Second Stage Theatre on April 20th and currently serves as home to the musical DAMES AT SEA, which recently announced a January 3rd closing date. Second Stage has revealed that following the renovation, the venue will be dedicated "exclusively to producing the work of living American Playwrights."
According to the site, the plans include both a renovation of the theater and a rebuilding of its annex building. Second Stage Executive Director Casey Reitz shared that the construction will make the space both "safe" and "accessible."
The Theater will also receive a new marquee which will be longer in length and will feature LEDs to make it easier
to see from Times Square. The existing awning will also be replaced.
Interior work will include a renovation of the lobby and stairs to make it wider. New carpet and paint are also elements of the plan.
