According to the New York Times, despite the legendary comedienne's stage credits, the lights of Broadway will not dim in memory of Joan Rivers. BroadwayWorld.com however has decided to honor the star, actress, and longtime theatre supporter by dimming its logo for the remainder of the day.

Update: Yesterday evening, Jujamcyn Theaters's Jordan Roth announced that they would dim their marquees on September 9th. This morning, they were joined by Disney as well.

Broadway League executive director Charlotte St. Martin told NYT: "Under our criteria people need to have been very active recently in the theater, or else be synonymous with Broadway - people who made their careers here, or kept it up."

She continued: "We love Joan - she was very supportive of Broadway and came to a lot of show openings - but she hasn't acted on Broadway in 20 years. When you say Joan Rivers, you don't think comedy, television and Broadway. You think comedy and television. It's certainly nothing against her."

Rivers died last week at the age of 81. She was long a fixture on the New York scene, with numerous standup appearances, benefit appearances, and a long association with the theatrical community. She was a constant presence at opening nights and special events, and never hesitated to express her love for theatre and live entertainment.

Her Broadway credits include Fun City, Broadway Bound and Sally Marr...and her escorts, for which she received a Drama Desk Nomination as Outstanding Actress in a Play and a Tony Nomination for Best Actress in a Play.
