Do you ever hear a line in a Broadway show or song that reminds you of ANOTHER Broadway show or song? It happens to me ALL THE TIME. The one that gets me most often is the moment in Company, just before "The Ladies Who Lunch," when Joanne says "I'd like to propose a toast...". Without fail, my brain goes straight to Rent, and continues the line (from "La Vie Boheme") "...to Maureen's noble try!"
With thousands upon thousands of Broadway cast albums, there are many themes, lyrics and song titles that are reminiscent of each other. More and more, I'm finding myself drawn to them. I find myself amazed and amused by the similarities, and that is how the twitter hashtag #BwaySongMashup came to be.
I started by tweeting my own ideas for silly mashups of Broadway songs; musical theatre portmanteaus, if you will. It was more or less a way to make myself giggle, and hopefully elicit a similar response from the lovelies who read my tweets. But then the twitterverse started to chime in with even better, more original, and more hilarious ideas than my own. So I decided to create a #BwaySongMashup contest, and give a BroadwayGirlNYC Prize Pack to the person who comes up with the best idea for combining two or more Broadway songs into one.
Please contribute your own by tweeting me @BroadwayGirlNYC and including the hashtag #BwaySongMashup. I'll pick a winner on Monday, July 25.**
It only takes an IDEA to enter the contest... but if you actually MAKE a mashup, I'll be really impressed!!!
