MAC and Broadway World Award winning performer, Kim Sutton, brings a bold new show, "Live to Tell, " a theatrical event conceived and created by Kim Sutton, Steven Ray Watkins, and Lennie Watts, to the Laurie Beechman Theatre this March for three performances. The "mischievous blonde bombshell and rebellious rabble-rouser," as she was described by Broadway World, celebrates her life with an eclectic musical set that samples 48 tunes by Madonna. Sutton recounts her childhood, years as a sailor, three brain surgeries and her "inevitable transformation into a woman of substance." Now recovered and well, Sutton pulls out all the stops in a show that's part intimate cabaret, part spectacle and part theater.
Performances are: March 2nd at 7pm, March 5th at 1pm and March 16th at 7pm. The show features Ashton Michael Corey, Paul Scott Pilcz, and Derek Staranowski and is directed by Lennie Watts, with Musical Direction and piano accompaniment by Steven Ray Watkins. Watkins will be joined by Matt Scharfglass on bass and Don Kelly on drums. The Laurie Beechman Theatre is located in the rear of the West Bank Café at 407 W. 42nd Street, NYC 10036. Phone number for venue is 212.695.6909. Phone number for tickets at Ovation TIX is:212.352.3101. The online ticketing link is: https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/967991. Each song is tied to an era or event in Sutton's life, from her teens through her recent surgeries for Progressive Essential Tremor. The repertoire explores a gamut of emotions from excitement to defiance to fear to acceptance and back.
Sutton debuted on the cabaret stage just a few short years ago at The Duplex with her show, 50 Shades of Kim, and followed that in 2015 with Anchors Away! - an autobiographical show that drew on her experiences in the military of the 1980s as the platform for an ebullient and touching look at Navy life. The classic pop-rock and Great American Songbook repertoire was performed from the point of view of a grown up Sutton who, as a teenage girl of limited means, made the choice for military service as a route to education and adventure. Billie Roe wrote in Broadway World, "...a fascinating glimpse of the life of a woman warrior in the military." Sutton won the Broadway World Cabaret Award for Best Show (Female) for Anchors Away!
Sutton followed that with a duo show she performed with her friend and musical colleague Kim Grogg. Whenever I Call You Friend won the MAC Award in 2016 for Best Duo Show.
