The Broadway community mourns the loss of Sam Cohn, who died yesterday at age 79.
A co-founder of International Creative Management, he was the talent agent for some of Hollywood and Broadway's top actors, writers, playwrights and directors. His engineering of deals for them made him the most powerful talent broker in theatre and film for decades. A true New Yorker, he supported his clients' theatrical projects with rare passion and commitment.
The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in his memory tonight, Thursday, May 7th, at exactly 8:00pm for one minute.
Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, commented, "Sam Cohn loved the theatre and truly cared about the quality of projects in which he was involved. His negotiations and creative deal making on behalf of his clients were legendary and enabled numerous Broadway productions to succeed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
In the early 80's, dozens of movies and Broadway plays opened with Sam Cohn clients as writers, directors or stars. A partial client roster during his career included: Woody Allen, Bob Fosse, John Guare, Arthur Miller, Liza Minnelli, Paul Newman, Mike Nichols, Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Kathleen Turner, Sigourney Weaver, John Kander and Fred Ebb.
His wife, Jane Gelfman, two children and four grandchildren, survive him.
The Broadway League, founded in 1930, is the national trade association for the Broadway industry. The League's 600-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers in over 240 North American cities, as well as suppliers of goods and services to the theatre industry. Each year, League members bring Broadway to nearly 30 million people in New York and on tour across the U.S. and Canada
