Broadway Producer Edgar Freitag Passes Away at 80

Beloved theater producer Edgar "Buddy" Freitag died on Wednesday, May 30th in New York City. He was 80. Buddy is currently represented on Broadway by the 2010 Tony Award winning Best Musical Memphis, and 2012 Tony Award nominees Porgy and Bess, Nice Work If You Can Get It and End of the Rainbow. The cause of death was complications from a brain tumor said wife and producing partner, Barbara Freitag.

Buddy attended Baruch College, CUNY and graduated in 1953. After serving 2 years in the US Army, Buddy enjoyed a 17 year career at Grey Advertising Agency in New York City as a Vice-President. He then co-founded United Financial of America, Inc. a national commercial mortgage banking/brokerage firm. Following the sale of his company, Buddy began investing, together with his wife Barbara, in many Off-Broadway and Broadway productions including Anna in the Tropics; Edward Albee's The Goat, Or Who is Sylvia?; Caroline, Or Change; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; The Drowsy Chaperone; West Side Story; Legally Blonde; In the Heights; and All My Sons. In 2007 Buddy began his Broadway producing career with The Homecoming. He went on to produce such Broadway shows as November, Passing Strange, The Miracle Worker, Catch Me If You Can, High and Blithe Spirit.

Buddy is survived by his wife Barbara, their four children, Larry Freitag, Eve Freitag, Harry Falk, Liz Freitag Dranoff, and 7 grandchildren. Services will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel on Thursday, May 31st at 12.00pm.
