Broadway performer Luis Salgado is honored this week for "being the change [he] wishes to see in the world".
On Monday, October 18th, Salgado and R.Evolución Latina (the non-profit organization that Salgado founded in 2007) were celebrated at the 2010 HOLA Awards. The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA) held this year's gala at The Players, America's oldest theatrical club.
Luis Salgado and R.Evolución Latina were awarded for their production of Ser o No Cer...vantes, a play written and directed by Goya Award Winner Yolanda García Serrano and Salvador Toscano. Salgado acted as producer for the play which was part of R.Evolución Latina's adult and youth educational programs, and was presented in May at the Engelman RecitAl Hall. Ser o No Cer...vantes garnered three awards: Gilberto Zaldívar Award for Outstanding Play (Ser o No Cer...vantes), Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor (Francisco Reyes, Ser o No Cer...vantes), Outstanding Performance by a Featured Male Actor (Modesto Lacén, Ser o No Cer...vantes).
Luis Salgado is also being honored with an El Award this Thursday October 21st. This award is a recognition given annually by El Diario La Prensa to the most outstanding men in our community. Salgado will be honored in the company of the Tri-state area's most successful and influential Latinos making strides in the corporate, business, entertainment, sports and community arenas.
Salgado is a celebrated Broadway performer, choreographer, philanthropist and producer. He is currently involved with three Broadway musicals; Luis plays Malik in Lincoln Center's new show, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, he maintains his role as Latin Assistant Choreographer for the Tony Award Winning musical In the Heights, and Salgado recently became one of "The People of Godspell" as he joined Ken Davenport in his quest to make Godspell the "First ever community produced Broadway musical."
Salgado's work outside of the theater is just as admirable and is perhaps the reason why he is continually celebrated by the community. In 2007, Luis Salgado founded R.Evolución Latina, a collective of artists and activists committed to empowering the artistic community in order to inspire growth within the Latino Community through collaboration, productions, and educational support programs. R.Evolución Latina is an affiliate of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and through Salgado's ideas, BC/EFA's support, and the help of fellow artists striving to make a difference, both Luis and the organization have been able to affect the lives of thousands of children and adults throughout the tri-state area. His commitment to inspiring and empowering youth through the arts, as well as his passion for instilling change have made Luis an artist who is celebrated for not only making his own dreams come true, but for encouraging us all to "be the change" and to dare to go beyond.
