Broadway Kids Care (BKC), the organization of Broadway children for children (and others), has been committed to supporting the Freedom House and Secret Garden - New York City shelters for disabled women and children and victims of domestic violence - for the past five years. This week, dedicated BKC children filled over 200 Easter baskets with treats and presented them to the children at Freedom House and Secret Garden. BKC's support of Freedom House and Secret Garden is based in the unique services the shelters provide. According to Emily Robinson, the Easter Basket Project spokesperson, "All of us involved in Broadway Kids Care are thrilled at the opportunity to share our good fortune with the children at Freedom House and Secret Garden. Thinking of the kids while creating the cards and filling the baskets was awesome. Knowing that we might be helping to make someone else's holiday a special one makes you stop for a minute to appreciate what you have and makes you feel great at the same time."
In the coming months, BKC will launch other projects and will team up with its grown-up cousins at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS on various philanthropic activities. BKC's dream has been to become a global organization, with its recent outreach and fundraising efforts to help the tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan.
Broadway Kids Care was founded by producer Kelly Gonda, and her husband, Louis Gonda in 2007 with the mission to preserve and perpetuate the theater community's grand tradition of public service and to involve the community's youngest members. BKC is currently led by the parents of children from current and past Broadway shows and dedicated to ensuring that the next generations of theatrical talent carry forth the message, mission and consciousness that has made Broadway such a vital part of New York City and beyond.
