Wikipedia vs. Mousetrap
by Robert Diamond - August 31, 2010

The WikiLeaks controversy has been getting the most Wikipedia related press these days, but there's been another controversy brewing between the web site and the London production of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap. In Wikipedia's description of the world's longest running play, still going since 1952 for more than 24,000 performances (wow!), they reveal the ending of the show.

The production has always attempted to keep the show's twisty ending of who the murderer is a secret, and they've been petitioning Wikipedia to take it down for years. The web site though, since 2007 has decided to remove 'all spoiler warnings' across the site. They defend themselves, comparing themselves to a library in which anyone can go and read the mystery novel and find the killer themselves.

Wikipedia is of course slightly more accessible than your local library but it's a tricky question as to what it's responsibility is. Personally, I think it's fine that they have the information up there BUT, I don't see any reason why it can't be hidden, or noted as a spoiler for those looking for more information (but not THAT much information) on the play. What do you think?
