Recylced Theatre
by Robert Diamond - June 24, 2010 When I saw the headline this morning about 'recycled theatre', I assumed that it was about the steady flow of revivals on both Broadway and in London's West End. But, I was wrong as usual, and instead the article in the UK pub - The Stage, is about the first 'recycled theatre' being built in the United Kingdom. The entire theatre will be made from recycled and reclaimed materials (there's another revivals joke in here, but I'm just going to let it go) ranging from kitchen units donated by the public, old theatre sets, and other salvaged materials. All of the props will be made from recycled and reclaimed items as well and the two plays that will launch the space will examine the human race's survival in the future. Talk about a good match of theme and venue! Click here for the full story. Of course regional and amateur theatre companies have been recycling and reusing props for years as a way to save money, but this certainly seems like taking it to the next level. No doubt that the Broadway Green Alliance will be taking note! |
