GLEE and Barbara Cook?
by Robert Diamond - November 21, 2009

Well, those are two things that I never expected to see together in the same story but using the thin threads of vocal warmth and cultural relevance, Charles Isherwood manages to do just that in the Sunday New York Times with a 'mashup' column

Amusing (and maybe just to me), Isherwood, who also comes late to the mashup game, makes reference to a few songs that GLEE has featured recently noting that:

But blended into the mix are musical theater songs like "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "Defying Gravity" (the big anthem from "Wicked") and "Maybe This Time" from "Cabaret."

For better or for worse, in terms of today's cultural relevance, I think that there's probably an equal (or more) need to point out what show "I Could Have Danced All Night" is from, as there is that Defying Gravity is from mega-hit WICKED even with the New York Times audience, about whom all we know for sure is that they weren't interested in Brighton Beach Memoirs.

In any event, the piece also talks about the wonderful new 'The Essential Barbara Cook Collection' from DRG Records, which really is a treat and worth picking up for the musical theatre lover in your life. We'll have a full review in our upcoming Holiday CD/Books/DVD roundups.
