Brick Theater Presents New York Clown Theatre Festival, 9/3-9/26

The Brick Theater, Inc., presenter of the first festival of Clown Theatre in New York in over 20 years in 2006, brings the festival back this fall as the 2010 New York Clown Theatre Festival, performing September 3-26 at The Brick Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This year's festival will feature diverse clown theatre artists from the Ukraine, Israel, Wales, Mexico, Canada, and across the United States from California, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Oregon, Chicago and New York City.

The festival will present 17 mainstage shows, 4 kid-friendly shows, 1 street show, and 5 cabarets, including a cabaret devoted to clowns over 50! The festival begins on September 3 with its traditional opening day parade from Union Square through the L line subway to Williamsburg, followed by an open-to-the-public pie fight at The Brick Theater! And it closes on September 26 with the traditional closing day Funeral, with clowns weeping and wailing in the streets of Williamsburg.

Michal Halel Abulafia of Israel performs Media Luna, a show first created and performed in San Cristobal de Las Casa in Chiapas, Mexico. Michal is a co-creator of Dahka Circus, an international circus that has traveled through Israel and Palestine with the message of laughter as a means for peace. 50 min.

Ms. Smart brings up four audience members who we discover are new secret agents on the Mission Improbable: a marriage proposal. Failing the mission and left to her own devices, she resorts to serenading the audience while playing piano behind her back, flipping upside-down, and tangling herself up while playing concertina, all to get that final guy (or gal) on one knee. 30 min.

Jeff and Buttons have TONS of material and now they have their own show so this should be cinch. Jeff and Buttons combine clowning, acrobatics, "magic" and improv to bring you comedy the likes of which have not been seen since the "Golden Age" of Vaudeville comedy (1933-1935). Chris Manley is a member of "New Excitement" and "Zoltar: The Future Telling Machine". Jeff went to the Clown Conservatory and has appeared on The Late Show with Letterman. Both of them co-wrote and acted in Kill Me Loudly: A Clown Noir. 60 min.

THE BRICK was founded in 2002 by Robert Honeywell and Michael Gardner. Formerly an auto-body shop, a yoga center, and various storage spaces, this brick-walled garage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was completely refurbished as a state-of-the-art performance space. Since then, The Brick has launched, produced and presented hundreds of world-premiere stage works from New York emerging artists and theater-makers from around the globe. The theater company is a proud member of New York's burgeoning Indie Theater community and informal home to an ever-expanding family of artists and avid theatergoers.
