The "Cartologia Suite", having been sketched out over several years by composer Brian Groder, is composed of six movements for jazz ensemble delving into the deeper meaning of maps present and past. Like music, mapmaking involves the use of symbols to represent external phenomena; through measurements and mathematical relationships, we model our world. The cartography theme of the project explores the challenges met by historical and contemporary modeling systems charting the new and unknown as individuals and societies faced profound changes in both social and mathematical orders.

The LMCC, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, has awarded Brian Groder a Manhattan Community Art Fund grant in the support of Cartologia Suite's music Modern-Progressive Jazz at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council: http://www.lmcc.net/

Brian Groder presents the "Cartologia Suite" at The Stone on Thursday, January 13th 8pm with Brian Groder (trumpet), Angelica Sanchez (piano), Sean Conly (bass), and Newman Baker (drums). There will be a music charge of $10 a person. The Stone is located at the corner of Avenue C and E. 2nd Street. For more information, visit http://www.thestonenyc.com/index.html.
