Actor Zachary Quinto reads the ecstatic love poetry of the thirteenth-century Persian mystic Rumi to mark the publication of Rumi's Secret, a biography by Brad Gooch.

Rumi, a Persian poet and Sufi mystic born over eight centuries ago, has been compared to Shakespeare for his outpouring of creativity and to Saint Francis of Assisi for his spiritual wisdom. In this breakthrough biography, Brad Gooch brilliantly brings to life the legendary man and puts a face to the name Rumi, vividly coloring in his time and place-a world as rife with conflict as our own. Ambitious, bold, and beautifully written, Rumi's Secret reveals the unfolding of Rumi's devotion to a "religion of love," remarkable in his own time and made even more relevant for the twenty-first century by this compelling account.

About the Speakers

Zachary Quinto received his BFA from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh in 1999. After moving to Los Angeles and breaking into television, he appeared as computer analyst Adam Kaufman on 24, Tori Spelling's flamboyant best friend on so noTORIous, and Sylar the super powered psychopathic serial killer on Heroes. Starting in 2009 Quinto appeared as Spock in the blockbuster reboot of the Star Trek franchise, directed by JJ Abrams. Aardvark by Brian Shoaf is slated for release in 2017. CAN TECHNOLOGY MAKE US MORE MINDFUL?

Wednesday, January 25, 2017; 7:00-8:30 PM

Tickets: $20.00 / Members: $18.00

Can technology make us more mindful? Rohan Gunatillake, creator of the best-selling meditation app buddhify, meets with Psychology professor Tracy Dennis to explore technology's role in meditation and the seemingly contradictory act of "plugging in to unplug."

About the Speakers

Named by Wired magazine in their Smart List of 50 people who will change the world, Rohan Gunatillake is the director of Mindfulness Everywhere, the company responsible for creating Kara, Sleepfulness, Cards for Mindfulness, and the best-selling hit app buddhify. Dr. Tracy Dennis is an emotion scientist and Professor in the Psychology Department at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has translated two decades of her research on the anxious brain and the fundamental impact of emotions on health into the development of clinically-validated digital mental health tools, including her stress-reduction app Personal Zen. Her work in mindfulness-based stress reduction in at-risk youth is the topic of the documentary film "Changing Minds at Concord High." She explores ideas about growing up and growing old in the digital age in her blog Psyche's Circuitry. She is the co-director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Health Technology and Wellness at Hunter College and the Stress, Anxiety, and Resilience Research Center. Dr. Dennis has appeared on stage at the Rubin for three Brainwave series programs: with Congressman Tim Ryan, the astronaut Scott Parazynski, and martial artist Shi Yan Ming.

JANUARY MIND/BODY PROGRAMS:

WORKING WITH ENEMIES

MEDITATION WORKSHOP WITH SHARON SALZBERG

Wednesday, January 11, 2017; 7:00-9:00 PM

Tickets: $45.00 / Members: $40.50

We all must work with our enemies. An enemy, whether within (a habitual, painful mind state) or without (someone for whom we steadily feel antipathy or fear), marks the edge between limited lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, equanimity, and the potential boundlessness of these qualities.

In this two-hour workshop Sharon Salzberg will explore inner and outer enemies; look at the fear, anger, and anguish generated by being stuck in a mode of "us" and "them"; and focus on the potential for liberation. The program will consist of dialogue, discourse, and meditation practice and is suitable for both beginning and experienced meditators.

About the Speaker

Sharon Salzberg, cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, has been a student of meditation since 1971, and guiding meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. Sharon's latest book is Real Happiness At Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace. She is weekly columnist for On being, a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and is also the author of several other books including the New York Times best-seller, Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation: A 28-Day Program, Love Your Enemies, Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience, and Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness.Sharon has been a regular participant in the Rubin's many on-stage conversations.
