Devasting news to the fashion world: Oscar de la Renta has passed away at 82. This comes just after Peter Copping was named Creative Director of the fashion house but de la Renta was to maintain a very active role. De la Renta told WWD, "I'm very happy Peter has agreed to join us. He is a great talent and along with our shared design sensibilities, we both have a deep curiosity about the wider world, from music and art to architecture and gardens. Our industry has not always done the best job when it comes to changes in design leadership. My hope is that, in leading this selection, and actively participating in the transition, I can ensure the right design future for our company and brand."
Born Óscar Arístides de la Renta Fiallo in Santo Domingo on July 22, 1932, de la Renta was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo. He then became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers to dress Jacqueline Kennedy. An award-winning designer, he worked for Lanvin and Balmain; his eponymous fashion house continues to dress leading figures, from film stars to royalty, into the 2010s.
His penchant for refined, ladylike looks struck a chord with celebrities, First Ladies and women of means. De la Renta won a slew of Coty Awards and numerous CFDA awards-including one in 1990 for Lifetime Achievement and in 2000 the CFDA Designer of the Year. CFDA's Executive Director, Fern Mallis, even called him "The Sultan of Suave".
