BroadwayWorld has learned that Falsettos, William Finn and James Lapine's landmark musical, will return to Broadway for the 2016-17 theater season in an all-new production directed by Lapine, who has also written the book for (and directed) Broadway's SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, INTO THE WOODS and PASSION.
Producer Jordan Roth, President of Jujamcyn Theaters, announced the news today, following earlier reports that the show would bow in Spring 2016.
FALSETTOS premiered on Broadway in 1992 -- after its characters first captured the hearts of theatergoers off-Broadway -- garnering rave reviews and seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and going onto win for Best Original Score (Finn) and Best Book of a Musical (Lapine and Finn).
Part intimate family drama, part neurotic urban comedy, and part keenly observed meditation on a shifting definition of the American family, Falsettos remains every bit as "exhilarating and heartbreaking" (Frank Rich, New York Times) as it was when it first premiered. As Marvin struggles to create a "tight knit family" out of his eclectic array of core relationships (including his ex-wife, his new boyfriend, his adolescent son, his psychiatrist, and his neighbors) amidst a series of monumental life changes, he is forced to reckon with his own views on love, responsibility, and what it means to be a man.
