RISE & FALL is a punk-speed bacchanalian party-show following the story of Jimmy Gallagher and his chorus of Alaskan cowboys, criminals on-the-run, and ladies of the night as he tries to create a new, perfect society.
Playwright Ian Storey shared in an essay for Culturebot, "When I was approached in 2013 by director Eric Powell Holm to do an adaptation for his company (Bread Arts Collective) and space, it was an unthinking certitude that lead me to Bertolt Brecht'sRise and Fall (of the City of Mahagonny): this was the play of the moment... Brecht intended to go out of the Reich making theater with a sledgehammer. Bread's production embraced this wildly, to the point that the script itself made little difference to their (and particularly the brilliant Katie Melby as Jimmy) perfect encapsulation of the play's - and our moment's, - Zeitgeist."
"The story is about a group of criminals on-the-run who decide to stop in their tracks and create a new, perfect society. This community happens to reside in a bar, People Lounge, so drinking is naturally built into the show." -shared Kelly Klein in an interview with li88y inc.-"We have original music by our member Andrew Lynch that fluctuates between ballad and punk-rock sensibilities. And, as a troupe of performers, we immerse the audience in our world by direct interaction, creative staging, and DIY lighting... We may not be reinventing the wheel with this model but we are certainly trying to turn it on it's head and get a new generation of theatre-goers to come on out, have a drink, and see some pretty fantastic stuff."
Featuring Katie Melby (Basil Twist's The Rite of Spring - Lincoln Center) as Jimmy Gallagher, Lyndsey Anderson (Let Him Eat Steak - The Barrow Group) as Hank,Toni Ann DeNoble (NBC's Shades of Blue; Las Meninas - Irondale Center)a s Trinity Moses, John Egan (The Rivals - The Pearl Theater; The Subject Was Roses - The Kennedy Center) as Jake, Kate Gunther (Drunk Shakespeare) as Jenny, Kelly Klein(The Diary of Anne Frank National Tour - Barter Theatre; Taking Woodstock film - Dir Ang Lee) as Willy the Veep, Benjamin Lewis (Happy Sauce -Minnesota Fringe) as Joe, and Andrew Lynch (Musical Theatre Factory) as Cadence Dakota Begbick.
