Brazilian Endowment for the Arts Extends Music And Musica

The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts has extended its musical series Music and Música to the fall thanks to a warmly received and successful summer series debut. Music and Música is a riveting union of Brazilian and American musical cultures. Designed to tip the hat to the long-term musical engagement between these two countries with evermore possibilities to continue thriving and growing, this series celebrates traditional styles as well as new works for the 21st century. This fall, BEA presents diverse artistry from Rubens Salles, Rogerio Souza, Pedro de Alcantara, ImManuel Davis, Käthe Jarka, Stephen Gosling, João Paulo Figueroa, The Sylvanus Ensemble featuring works of Phil Salathé, João Kouyoundjian, Eugene Marlow's Heritage Ensemble, Englewinds Ensemble, the João MacDowell Trio and a CD release party for American composer Frank Brickle's Ab nou cor featuring the Cygnus Ensemble, sopranos Elizabeth Farnum and Haleh Abghari with actor, Paul Hecht.

Pedro de Alcantara has long traveled between countries and between creative domains. After growing up in São Paulo, Brazil, he studied music in New York and at Yale University. Following his American sojourn he lived in London for seven years, where he trained as a teacher of the Alexander Technique, a problem-solving method based on the idea that good health is a creative act. He's the author of Indirect Procedures: A Musician's Guide To The Alexander Technique and Integrated Practice: Coordination, Rhythm & Sound, both published by the Oxford University Press. His books also include the children's novels Backtracked and Befiddled, published by Random House.

Flutist ImManuel Davis is a highly versatile performer who enjoys performing a wide range of repertoire, from the baroque to the contemporary. He has performed as a recitalist and master class teacher worldwide, including in Japan, Norway, Mexico and Colombia. He has appeared as a recitalist and chamber musician at Weill Recital hall at Carnegie Hall, MoMa's Summer Garden Series, Noonday Concerts at Trinity Church, and the Meet the Virtuoso series at the 92nd St Y. Orchestral work has included performances with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, Riverside Symphony, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Jupiter Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic. Mr. Davis has also played on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, Show Boat and Ragtime, among others. Immanuel released his first CD, Prevailing Winds in December of 2003.

In 2005, Immanuel was a recipient of a Fulbright Grant for study of baroque flute with Wilbert Hazelzet at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague. Since then he has performed as a baroque flutist with early music ensembles ARTEK, The Bach Society, Lyra Baroque, Early Music New York, and several times in recital with Barthold Kuijken.

In February 2011, Immanuel released "On a Clear Morning", a recording of works by Philippe Gaubert, performed on Period French Instruments.
Educated at the Juilliard School, Mr. Davis received both Bachelor's and Master's degrees as a student of Julius Baker. ImManuel Davis has been the flute professor at the University of Minnesota since 2001.

Cellist Käthe Jarka has performed to critical acclaim in major concert venues across the United States, Canada, and in Europe as a recitalist and chamber musician. She has collaborated with such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Ruth Laredo, Grant Johannesen, Donald Weilerstein, and the Juilliard Quartet, and has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival. As a member of the Shanghai Quartet, she toured extensively, appearing at the Tanglewood, Norfolk, and Ravinia Festivals, among others.

Pianist Stephen Gosling enjoys a varied career as soloist and chamber musician with a particular focus on the music of our time. He is currently a member of the New York New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Sospeso, Manhattan Sinfonietta, American Modern Ensemble, and Ne(x)tworks. He is additionally a frequent guest of many other groups, including the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Bang on a Can, and Absolute Ensemble. His work has garnered consistent critical acclaim, and he was profiled by The New York Times in October of 2005. Gosling earned his bachelor's, master's and Doctoral degrees at The Juilliard School.
