Brad Pitt has gone on the record about New York's new gay marriage legislation. Pitt commented in a People.com statement: "It is encouraging that New York has joined the movement to grant equal marriage rights to its citizens. But it is each American's Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit."
He continued, "No state should decide who can marry and who cannot. Thanks to the tireless work of so many, someday soon this discrimination will end and every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage."
The June 24 vote marked a major landmark in New York's journey to equality, which is now the sixth and largest state in the nation to approve gay marriage.
Throughout the path to legislation, many groups and performers with strong ties to Broadway have offered support with organizations such as Broadway Impact leading the way. Broadway Impact is a grassroots organization of the theatre community and its fans, mobilizing in support of marriage equality. Founded by Gavin Creel, Rory O'Malley and Jenny Kanelos, they aim to educate and inspire the community into to action.
