Manhattan Theatre Club has announced that they will present the American premiere of Rebecca Lenkiewicz's new version of AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt, The Royal Family, The Whipping Man, Defiance) on Broadway this fall.
Starring four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE will play the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, with previews beginning Tuesday, September 4, 2012 and opening on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
MTC Artistic Director Lynne Meadow said, "I am looking forward to a season of new plays and new perspectives on world renowned works. I'm thrilled to open the Broadway season with Rebecca Lenkiewicz's vibrant new version of Ibsen's AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE with Doug Hughes directing the American premiere for us at the Friedman Theatre. It has been 40 years since the play was last seen on Broadway and the power and humanity of Ibsen's masterpiece is as timely as ever – especially in the fall election season."
Meadow and Greenfield are finalizing plans for the rest of the 2012-2013 season and will announce additional productions in the coming weeks.
When Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Boyd Gaines) discovers toxic contamination in the water used at the local baths, he expects to be hailed as a hero. But since the baths are the town's main source of revenue, the community fights to silence him… and Dr. Stockmann learns that there are forces more powerful than truth. An incisive tale about the high price of free expression, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE makes a timely return to the New York stage in this bold new version by one of Britain's most exciting young writers, Rebecca Lenkiewicz.
In addition to Gaines as Dr. Thomas Stockmann, Richard Thomas will play Peter Stockmann mayor of the town and brother of Dr. Thomas Stockmann.
Additional casting and creative team for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE will be announced shortly.
