In this acclaimed, early play by renowned writer Octavio Solis (Se Llama Cristina at INTAR; Pulitzer Prize nominated Lydia at Mark Taper Forum) Scout, a computer programmer with promise of upward mobility, attracts the interest of Liza and Vince, foolhardy opportunists in a complicated relationship. Vince drags the trio home where his wife Elena remains homebound smoking pot, watching porn, and craving snow peas. A drink and drug fueled night between unlikely friends scrapes down desires, secrets, and identities to the bone.
Prospect received its West Coast Premiere at El Teatro Campesino in 1993. It has received subsequent productions at the Latino Chicago Theatre Company, The Magic Theatre in San Francisco, and the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, CA. This will be the play's first time on the East Coast.
"Prospect is the first play I wrote after taking INTAR's Hispanic Playwrights-in-Residence Lab with Maria Irene Fornes," says playwright Octavio Solis. "In many ways, she opened up my imagination and enabled me to craft this story about a young man trying to 'score' in Dallas, Texas. Looking back on this work now, more than 27 years since its first production, I see how I was also trying to articulate something about the dark underbelly in Reagan's America. The sudden wealth, the prosperity, and the hedonism left so many behind to eke out a squalid living on the 'trickle-down.' In a direct reflection of that world, the endless partying in Prospect becomes a kind of paroxysm of despair that takes us all to the very edge of our being."
"Prospect hilariously exposes our frenzied hunt for success, and questions what we abandon to get to where we feel entitled to be," says director Elena Araoz, "how family falls victim while we flail and thrash about for a fighting chance."
The cast will feature Oscar Cabrera (Marfa Lights at INTAR), Keira Keeley (Angels in America, Part 1 & Part 2 at Signature Theatre; How To Make Friends And Then Kill Them at Rattlestick), Cliff Rivera (De Novo: Lil Silent at 59E59), Dannielle Skraastad (The Pain and the Itch at Playwrights Horizons), Terrell Donnell Sledge (Find and Sign with Naked Angels), and Monica Steuer (La Paloma Prisoner at Signature Theatre).
The creative team will include Set Design by Jorge Dieppa (Five Kinds of Silence with Boundless Theatre), Costume Design by Sarita Fellows (Hedwig and the Angry Inch with ReVision Theatre, NJ), Lighting Design by María Cristina Fusté (Germans in Paris at 59E59), and Sound Design by Nathan Leigh (Gothamist's 2007 Sound Design of the Year for The Debate Society's The Eaten Heart) with Stage Manager Alannah O'Hagan.
