Christine Baranski, Mark Rylance and Bradley Whitford will star in the London smash Boeing-Boeing, Marc Camoletti's classic sixties comedy of errors opening at Broadway's Longacre Theatre (220 West 48th St) on Sunday, May 4. Directed by Matthew Warchus, the show begins preview performances Saturday, April 19.
The casting of the three flight attendants will be announced shortly. The London production was just honored with two 2008 Oliver Award nominations: Best Revival and Best Actor in a Play, Mark Rylance.
Christine Baranski won a SAG Award, an Emmy Award and three additional Emmy nominations for her work on the hit series "Cybill" and shared two SAG Awards for the films Chicago and The Birdcage. On Broadway, she is the winner of two Tony Awards: for Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing and Neil Simon's Rumors. Boeing-Boeing marks her first Broadway appearance in 17 years. She stars opposite Meryl Streep in this summer's film of the smash musical Mamma Mia!
Acclaimed British stage star Mark Rylance makes his Broadway debut in Boeing-Boeing, reprising the performance that earned him Best Actor nominations from both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards. He served as Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre for 10 years where he appeared in the title roles of Henry V and Hamlet as well as Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra and Olivia in Twelfth Night. In the West End he won an Olivier Award as Best Actor for Benedict in Much Ado about Nothing directed by Matthew Warchus. He is also a BAFTA Award winner, winning the prestigious best actor award for the TV production of "The Government Inspector."
Bradley Whitford returns to the New York stage where he began his career off-Broadway at MTC and Lincoln Center and on Broadway in A Few Good Men. For his TV work, he won an Emmy Award and shared two SAG Awards for his portrayal of presidential aide Josh Lyman in the landmark series "The West Wing." He most recently starred in Aaron Sorkin's acclaimed follow up series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip."
"In Boeing-Boeing, an architect living in Paris (Whitford) has been successfully juggling three flight attendant fiancées with his housekeeper (Baranski) reluctantly playing romantic air-traffic controller as they fly in and out of his swank bachelor pad. But when an old school pal (Rylance) visits, things get rather turbulent. Schedules change, flights are delayed and chaos ensues in this whirl of mayhem and matchmaking," describe press notes.
Boeing-Boeing features a design by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, original music by Claire Van Kampen, sound by Simon Baker and curtain call by Bruno Tonioli.
