The BodyCartography Project will present Symptom, a new dance work, in Minneapolis, Nov. 11-14, 2010, and in New York, Jan. 5-13, 2011.

The Minneapolis performances will be part of the Catalyst Series at Intermedia Arts, a new initiative that seeks to enhance efforts by artists to bring about change in their communities by providing resources for the creative process, marketing and audience engagement.

In New York, the company will perform in the Coil Festival at Performance Space 122, a venerable venue dedicated to diverse and innovative expressions in dance, theater, music and performance.

Symptom examines the differences between subjective and objective understandings of the human body, where a symptom may act as an indicator, trait, feature or sign that is subject to interpretation. The work features performance by twin siblings, dancer Otto Ramstad and visual artist Emmett Ramstad, direction by Otto Ramstad and Olive Bieringa, and sound composition by Andrea Parkins. Their collective effort investigates the human body as an object of study and producer of knowledge; notions of social bodies versus biological bodies; dynamics of sibling rivalry; and the gaps between seeing, knowing and empathy.

The November and January performances of Symptom represent the finished product of a work-in-progress by the same name that was previewed at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis last April for the SCUBA Touring Network for Dance. SCUBA is a cooperative curating and presenting enterprise that includes the Southern, Velocity Dance Center, Seattle; ODC Theater, San Francisco; and Philadelphia Dance Projects.
