The world premiere production of Bernarda Alba, a new musical with words and music by Michael John LaChiusa
and direction and choreography by Graciela Daniele, will open tonight, March 6th, at 6:45 PM at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater
(150 West 65 Street); previews began on February 11th.
Adapted from The House of Bernarda Alba,
Federico García Lorca's final play which is widely acknowledged as a
masterpiece of 20th century dramatic literature, the musical is the
story of a newly-widowed mother--played by Tony Award-winner Phylicia Rashad (Gem of the Ocean, A Raisin in the Sun, Into the Woods)--who enforces her iron will on her large household, only to have her daughters--played by Judith Blazer (Titanic), Nikki M. James (All Shook Up), Sally Murphy (The Wild Party, Carousel), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Anna in the Tropics, Rent), Saundra Santiago (Nine, Chronicle of a Death Foretold)--overwhelm her tyranny. The cast also features Yolande Bavan (Chronicle of a Death Foretold), Candy Buckley (Cabaret), Laura Shoop (Fiddler on the Roof) and Nancy Ticotin (Damn Yankees).
Bernarda Alba features sets by Christopher Barreca, costumes by Toni Leslie-James,
lighting by Stephen Strawbridge, orchestrations by Michael Starobin and
music direction by Deborah Abramson.
The performance schedule for Bernarda Alba is
Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, with matinees Wednesdays and
Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets, priced at $70 to $75, are
