Baryshnikov Arts Center Announces Fall 2013 Artist Residencies and Public Events

Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) has announced its fall 2013 line-up of artist residency activities and public presentations. The season, which runs through December 20, focuses on supporting artistic development and providing audiences access to experience innovative new work at no cost.

BAC's artist residency program, now in its ninth year, takes center stage this season, providing nearly 30 weeks of time and space to nine artists for creative investigation. Support for each resident artist includes up to three weeks in one of BAC's studios or theaters, honoraria, technical and administrative services, and work-in-progress showings.

This fall, dance resident artists include Jack Ferver (September 18 - October 8),Yasuko Yokoshi (September 23 - October 11), Jill Sigman (October 14 - November 15), Sam Kim (October 28 - November 22), Joanna Kotze (November 18 - December 5), and Helen Simoneau (December 2 - 20). Theater resident artists include Okwui Okpokwasili(October 28 - November 15), Andrew Ondrejcak (November 11 - December 6), and Cazimir Liske (November 19 - December 20).

Several BAC residents will open their rehearsals, work-in-progress showings, and staged readings to the general public, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process. Artists who will share the projects developed during their residency period include Jill Sigman on October 18 at 1PM and 3PM, Sam Kim on November 18 at 5PM, Andrew Ondrejcak on December 6 at 2PM, and Cazimir Liske on December 18 at 7PM.

BAC's fall performance series includes two free public presentations, the first of which is an evening of performance and conversation with dance artists Zab Maboungou and Nora Chipaumire, moderated by Dr. Charmaine Warren. The presentation on October 24 at 7PM in BAC's Studio 4A will launch a series celebrating African women choreographers, curated by Ms. Chipaumire.

The second fall presentation at BAC is a video and sound installation based on John Cage's graphic score 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs.Cosmopolis: 49 Waltzes for the World, a global documentary project developed by filmmakers Roberta Freidman and Daniel Loewenthal, will be on continuous view in BAC's studios 4A and 4B during designated hours December 11 - 15.

BAC's free programs this fall extend to New York City public high school students participating in BAC After School, an education program now in its third season. Students nominated by teachers from partner schools will engage in production workshops in BAC's theater spaces, and write critical responses to performances they attend at BAC and other venues such as Signature Theater, New York Live Arts, French Institute Alliance Française, and BAM.

Lastly this fall, and for the fifth consecutive year, BAC provides artistic direction for the Ringling International Arts Festival in Sarasota, Florida, introducing New York-based and international contemporary dance, music, and theater artists to the region. The festival, which runsOctober 9-12, will feature performances by Rocío Molina, Tere O'Connor Dance, Stephen Prutsman, Leev Theater Group, and Belarus Free Theatre, among others. During her two-week residency at BAC, choreographer Jill Sigman will hold two work-in-progress showings of PERMA(culture), a research and performance project exploring the way living systems can inform movement systems. Whereas previous work on this project has taken place in nature, the BAC residency will focus on developing it choreographically in a studio environment.

Montreal-based Congolese artist Zab Maboungou and New York-based Zimbabwean choreographer/performer Nora Chipaumire present an evening of performance and conversation on African women who have made pioneering contributions to the world of contemporary dance. The evening culminates a weeklong residency at BAC during which the women will develop a work to be performed by Chipaumire, followed by a conversation with the artists about Maboungou's body of work and influence on the world of performance.

Choreographer Sam Kim will conclude her three-week residency at BAC with an open rehearsal of Sister to a Fiend, a work inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and clothing designer Martin Margiela. Kim began developing this work during a spring 2013 residency at BAC.

Writer, director, and designer Andrew Ondrejcak will conclude his three-week residency at BAC with a work-in-progress showing of his adaptation of A Dream Play by August Strindberg. His collaborators include choreographer Rebecca Warner.

Cosmopolis: 49 Waltzes for the World is a global video documentary project based on John Cage's 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs, a graphic score that appeared in Rolling Stone magazine in 1977. Using chance operations, Cage identified and superimposed 49 multi-colored triangles on the Hagstrom map of New York City, and encouraged participants to go to the apex of each angle and listen to or record the sounds of the city. Utilizing Cage's concept, the Cosmopolis project is a series of video installations developed by filmmakers Roberta Friedman and Daniel Loewenthal. Striking visual and sound portraits taken from the streets of Cairo, Beijing, Graz, Detroit, and New York City reflect urban cultures in transition.

American actor, director, and musician Cazimir Liske will conclude his three-week residency at BAC with a staged reading of a new production of Illusions by Ivan Viripaev, one of Russia's leading contemporary playwrights. Liske, a graduate of the Moscow Art Theatre School, translated the text and directs the play.
