Don't count out Barbra Streisand's long-gestating film adaptation of GYPSY quite yet.
As part of a Sirius XM Town Hall held yesterday and moderated by Jay Lander, the famed singer and actress said of the project: "I see every frame of it...I think it's possibly gonna happen."
As BWW previously reported, Matthew Warchus will not be joining Barbra Streisand as helmer for Universal's upcoming GYPSY big-screen adaptation. But Nikki Finke recently wrote that Babs could be considering a dual role as 'Mama Rose' and director for the project. Streisand last directed a musical in 1983 -- Yentl, which she also produced, co-wrote and starred in.
The GYPSY film also hired a new screenwriter to adapt the Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurentsmusical -- Richard LaGravenese -- who worked with Streisand in 1996 on The Mirror Has Two Faces.
The Town Hall, taped yesterday where Streisand sat down for an intimate Q&A session with a select group of listeners in the SiriusXM studios in New York City, was held in anticipation of tomorrow's launch of the Barbra Streisand XM channel, which will run through Friday, October 10, via satellite on Sirius channel 69 and XM channel 73.
The channel will be fully dedicated to Streisand's extensive body of work and will include selections from her live and studio recordings. The channel will also include Streisand's personal song selections from her catalog, spanning 50 years.
Streisand has appeared on Broadway in I Can Get It For You Wholesale and Funny Girl. She has also received a special Tony Award. Her film work includes Funny Girl, Funny Lady, Yentl, and Nuts. A lauded performer, she has won numerous awards including the Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy awards.
