Schools That Can, a national nonprofit focused on improving urban education, will honor the life of jazz singer and civil rights activist Lena Horne with a star-studded, one-night-only benefit concert, held at New York's Symphony Space, located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street, New York, NY 10025, tonight, January 11, 2016 at 7:30pm. A VIP reception will take place at next door Bar Thalia (entry on 95th St.) from 6-7pm.
Schools That Can, in collaboration with Lena Horne's daughter, Gail Buckley, have joined together to honor the legendary singer who was passionate about civil rights and equal opportunities for disadvantaged children, to support an organization dedicated to closing the opportunity and skills gap in education.
The concert will feature performances from Kennedy Center Honoree and Tony Award-winning actress Barbara Cook, Tony Award winner Billy Porter ("Shuffle Along," "Kinky Boots"), Tony Award winner Lea Salonga ("Allegiance," "Miss Saigon"), Tony Award nominee De'Adre Aziza ("Passing Strange"), and Tony Award-nominated lyricist Amanda Green.
Also taking the stage are rising Broadway stars Emmy Raver-Lampman ("Hamilton"), Lindsay Mendez ("Wicked"), Rebecca Naomi Jones ("American Idiot"), Telly Leung ("Allegiance"), and Rick Lyon ("Avenue Q"), as well as singer and host Justin Guarini ("American Idol") and jazz signer Marti Stevens. WBGO's Gary Walker will emcee the event. Daniel Goldstein will direct the show, with musical direction and arrangements by Marco Paguia.
Schools That Can (STC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that connects teachers, principals, advocates, experts and other leaders to share innovative and effective practices and advance quality in urban schools. Proceeds from the benefit will support both local and national programming in the STC network of 149 schools.
