HAIRSPRAY is hitting the Hollywood Bowl this weekend. Original (and Tony-winning) Broadway stars Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur lead the cast, which additionally features Corbin Bleu, Drew Carey, Diana DeGarmo, Mo Gaffney, Nick Jonas, Darlene Love, Tara Macri, and John Stamos. It is no wonder, then, that BroadwayWorld's Matthew Rodrigues sang (literally) his enthusiasm when offered the opportunity to visit the company in rehearsal. Block will join the Tony® Award winning company of Anything Goes performing the role of "Reno Sweeney" while Sutton Foster is filming the television pilot, Bunheads, for 3 weeks beginning tonight, November 4. Paper Mill Playhouse will open its 2011-2012 season with the premiere of a new Disney stage musical, Newsies. Featuring music by eight time Academy Award®-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, The Little Mermaid), lyrics by Jack Feldman and a new book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy), Newsies is adapted for the stage from the live-action Disney feature film musical. The production is being directed at Paper Mill by Tony® nominee Jeff Calhoun (The Will Rogers Follies, Grey Gardens). The show begins performances on Thursday, September 15. The official press opening is scheduled for Sunday, September 25. Recently, BroadwayWorld stopped by the Newsies open call in New York City and went inside the audition room. James Franco, will co-host the 2011 Oscars has confirmed to MTV news that he will co-star with Oscar winner Nicole Kidman in the upcoming Broadway revival of SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH, according to Showbiz411.com. If you’re a BWW.com regular, you know that we have taken a shine to a relatively new not-for-profit group, The Broadway Dreams Foundation. We saw first-hand, last summer, in Philadelphia and were pretty much blown away.
