The smash hit Tony and Pulitzer Award Winning musical RENT closed on Broadway on September 7th, 2008 after a thirteen year run, making it the 8th longest running show on Broadway. Over the years, the show amassed a huge fanbase of devoted and loyal "RENTheads" many of whom were extremely sad to see their beloved musical closing after so many years.
So instead of saying goodbye to the show forever, the team behind the force that is RENT launched an extremely successful National Tour that reunited Original Broadway Cast members Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal (along with Gwen Stewart) with a group of extremely talented actors that included both RENT alum (such as Justin Johnston and Michael McElroy) and complete newcomers (Lexi Lawson). The tour has been going strong for over a year now, and has traveled all over the United States, Japan and Korea. It finally came to Toronto, Ontario, Canada mid-January where it had a very successful run at The Canon Theatre. During their time in Toronto, the cast was nice enough to provide some interviews and photos to BWW, as well as this video footage of the tour.
Currently playing in Madison, WI, the tour enters its final week when it hits Sacramento, CA February 3rd. It will play the Community Center Theater in Sacramento until February 7th, when it officially closes. The Sacramento date will be the final chance to see the production before it closes for good, and is a unique opportunity to see this finely tuned cast perform the roles they have been doing for over a year (and in many cases, much longer). While the show may be closing, it is clear when you see the production and watch the faces of the fans in the audience that the message of Jonathan Larson and the music of RENT will continue to live on for years to come.
