They painted the town (and all that jazz) last night for the NYC premiere!
Telling the story of Broadway's most iconic choreographer and most beloved dancer is not a challenge that the cast of FX's Fosse/Verdon ever took likely. Since filming began in 2018, Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams realized that the portraying the title duo's complicated relationship on screen would be an equally complicated process behind the scenes.
"It was a big undertaking and every day was a challenge. You know, Michelle [Williams] said early on, 'You know, we can never relax. We have to stay on top of this.' And she was right. You couldn't just coast, you had to step up," explained Rockwell on the red carpet for last night's NYC premiere. "It was brutal, to be honest with you."
Williams understood quickly the responsibility on portraying such a beloved icon of the theatre. "She was such a special woman. People who I talked to, who knew her when she was alive... I heard over and over again that she was the kindest women. Aside from being the greatest Broadway dancer of her time and of any time, the legacy that she left was of generosity," says Williams. "She was a beautiful, beautiful soul."
Be sure to catch the premiere of Fosse/Verdon tonight, April 9 (10pm) on FX. In the meantime, watch as both Rockwell and Williams (plus other creative team and cast members like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Steven Levenson, Andy Blankenbuehler, Aya Cash, Kelli Barrett, Bianca Marroquín, Norbert Leo Butz) tell us about about their real-life characters and how they fit into the Fosse/Verdon narrative!
